MAYVILLE – The number of babies born in Chautauqua County is on the decline.
That’s according to a report from the Jamestown Post-Journal, which says that there were 288 fewer babies born in 2018, compared to just nine years earlier.
According to a report in Sunday’s paper, there were 1,491 births in the county in 2009. Last year, there were 1,203 newborn babies.
The birthrate across the country is on the decline, so officials aren’t able to make a direct comparison between the local drop in birthrate and the apparent loss of overall population across the county due to people moving away.
In response to the news of local population loss and the data showing there have been fewer births as well, County Executive George Borrello said county officials have to focus retaining current residents and possibly attract new ones.
