MAYVILLE – Chautauqua County lawmakers are considering whether or not to use $20,000 of county bed tax money toward a proposed powerboat on the waters of Lake Erie just off of Dunkirk.
On Thursday Dunkirk city officials were in Mayville for the Chautauqua County Legislature’s audit and control committee to make a case for the funding.
According to the Post-Journal, the Great Lakes Offshore Grand Prix would feature powerboats from the Race World Offshore racing league and would take place from Aug. 17-19.
In past years the county has allocated $12,000 for the annual air show in Dunkirk, but with that event coming to an end, Dunkirk officials want the funding shifted to the power boat race, along with an additional $20,500.
Dunkirk’s Mayor said the city will not be able to host the event without the additional funding assistance from the county.
The committee approved the proposal and it will go before the full legislature next week.
