FALCONER – The Falconer village board unanimously approved the village’s 2018-19 budget Monday night, with total spending at $1,420,756.
The total property tax levy for the fiscal year, which begins June 1, is $821,454, which results in a property tax rate of $9.02/1000 assessed value an increase of 27 cents, or 3.09 percent, over the current year. Mayor James Rensel said it’s the first time the village has seen tax rate increase in four years and said there are a few reasons why the hike is needed.
“The anticipated loss in property taxes from the downtown and it’s going to take a little bit of money to get that cleaned up. We also have personnel raises coming through, and depending on what happens with our different challenges going, we have to be able to still function here, so that’s kind of what we’re looking at,” Rensel said.
The mayor also said that despite the tax hike being over 3 percent, it still falls below the state tax cap limit because the village had not increased taxes during the past four years.
