OVERNIGHT SNOW MAKES FOR CAUTIOUS MORNING COMMUTE
MAYVILLE – Motorists making their morning commute today may want to take a little more time getting to their destination. The area saw about two inches of heavy snow fall overnight, and that’s caused some of the city’s side streets and rural roadways to become slippery this morning. MAYVILLE MAN CHARGED WITH ROBBING LOCAL MOTEL
ELLICOTT – A Mayville man is in custody after an armed robbery at a hotel that occurred just north of the city limit early Wednesday. Authorities say 26 year-old Matthew McKane was charged with second-degree robbery after an investigation into the incident in Ellicott.
Ellicott Police responded at 1:45 a.m. Wednesday to a call at the Comfort Inn at 2800 N. Main St. Ext., Ellicott for a reported armed robbery that had just occurred. The man then fled with an undisclosed amount of money. Responding officers were able to get a vehicle description along with a description of a single person involved. A short time later a Sheriff’s deputy saw a vehicle matching the description in Dewittville. The vehicle was pulled over and after an investigation and search of his vehicle, evidence was found allegedly linking McKane to the crime. He was then taken into custody and arraigned in Ellicott Town Court.
Police believe McKane may have also been involved in other hotel robberies both in Chautauqua County and in Pennsylvania – including the one earlier this week at the Holiday Inn Express in Findley Lake.

HOUSE, SENATE PASS VETERANS’ COMPENSATION COST-OF-LIVING ADJUSTMENT ACT
WASHINGTON – Earlier this week Congressman Brian Higgins joined his colleagues in the House of Representatives in the Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2011. Higgins said the modest increase is the least congress can do for our veterans who make supreme sacrifices to protect our freedom and serve our country.
The bill increases the amounts paid to veterans for disability compensation and to their survivors for dependency and indemnity compensation by 3.6-percent, the same cost-of-living adjustment payable to Social Security recipients. The VA estimates that it will provide disability compensation to nearly 3.6 million veterans with service-connected disabilities in FY 2012. The legislation – now approved by the House and the Senate, and awaiting the president’s signature – will take effect on Dec. 1, 2011
