JAMESTOWN – While the main focus this winter has been on the cold temperatures and record lows the past few weeks, the amount of snowfall has not gone unnoticed.

So far, Erie, Pa. (just 20 minutes west of Chautauqua County) leads the list of snowiest big city in America. As of Feb. 10, Erie has seen a total of 107.5 inches of snow. Second on the list is Buffalo (about a 30 minute drive from the northern border of Chautauqua County), which has seen 94.4 inches of snow this winter.

Given that Chautauqua County is located between the two cities, it’s likely that we’ve seen similar snow totals this year, although the exact amount is not the focus of national attention because we are a mostly rural area.

Third on the Grand Rapids, Mich. with 92.2 inches, followed by Syracuse, N.Y. with 81 inches and then Rochester, N.Y. with 71.8 inches.

Each year the snowiest city in America receives the “Golden Snow Globe” award, which went to Syracuse in 2013. New York also bestows its own award to the snowiest city – the Golden Snowball.
