CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY – The clean up continues today in areas of southern Chautauqua County that were affected by heavy rainfall overnight Tuesday and into Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, between 2 and 4 inches of rain fell across the area – swelling local rivers and streams and causing flooding low lying areas around Chautauqua Lake and in Jamestown, along with the towns of Busti, Ellicott, Poland, Kiantone and Carroll.

The hardest hit areas were Ashville, Greenhurst, Falconer, Ross Mills and Frewsburg. The flooding got so bad in some areas that major roadways were closed – including portions of Route 60 and Route 62, along with Route 380 North of Falconer and Route 394 in Lakewood and West Ellicott. In Jamestown, Jones and Gifford Ave. was closed, along with areas of Allen St.

The flooding affected dozens of business and hundreds of homes – which will continue today to pump water out of their basements and other flooded areas. Most notably, SAMs club in West Ellicott had flooding inside the store – while TitanX and other businesses along the industrial corridor in Falconer pumped water from their businesses.

As a result of the conditions, both Falconer and Frewsburg sent students home early.

Residents in Kiantone and the Lakewood area were also without power for a short period of time due to fallen trees.

The heavy rain, flooding and power outages kept rescue crews busy throughout the day on Friday. The Post-Journal is reporting Jamestown Fire Department received about 100 calls regarding flooded basements. Volunteer fire companies across the region were also busy assisting property owners and redirecting traffic.
