MORNING NEWS: Black Ice and High Speed Leads to Fatal Auto Accident on I-86

January 18, 2013 By WRFA Radio Leave a Comment

MINA – The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office is blaming high speed and icy roads for a fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred early Thursday morning on the East Bound lane of I-86 in the Town of Mina.

Police say ay about 3 a.m. Thursday morning, an eastbound tractor-trailer, driven by Theon Nelson, was stopped in the driving lane of I-86 due to another vehicle that had jack knifed in front of him. A box truck, driven by 63 year old Milton Pertl of Girard, Pa, was also traveling east and drove into the rear of the stopped tractor trailer. As a result Pertl was killed in the accident.  A portion of I-86 East was closed from the time of the accident until shortly after 8am.

An investigation found the road was ice covered due to freezing rain that was in the area and witnesses say Pertl was traveling at a high rate of speed shortly before the accident occurred.
