MORNING NEWS: Schumer Offers Assistance to Local Manufacturer

February 20, 2013 By WRFA Leave a Comment

Senator Chuck Schumer is offering a Chautauqua County factory his help to speed up payments for a $75 million Department of Energy contract.

RHI Monofrax in Falconer has been contracted to create highly specialized ceramic products used to solidify nuclear waste making it less dangerous. The business currently has a long-term contract with the D.O.E. but now wants to compress it into fewer years, allowing RHI to save money and jobs by repurposing a large kiln for new projects.

During an appearance earlier this week, Senator Schumer said his goal is to convince the Dept. of Energy to have larger purchases sooner so the kiln can be running all the time rather than squiggle it out over 25 years, which will raise the cost to Monofrax and raise the cost to the federal government.

RHI Monofrax employs about 250 people and is one of the largest electricity consumer in the Jamestown area.
