BPU Water Main Break Leads to Boil Water Advisory for Some Busti, West Ellicott Customers

October 25, 2019 By WRFA Radio Leave a Comment

JAMESTOWN – A water main break in the Town of Busti has prompted the Chautauqua County Department of Health to issue a boil water order for a portion of the Town of Busti and West Ellicott.

According to the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities, between Big Tree Road and Southwestern Drive south of Hunt Road and for Orchard Road in the Town of Ellicott. Customers in the affected area are ordered by the County Department of Health to boil all water for drinking and cooking until further notice.

The order comes after a water main break at the BPU Water Pump Station at the corner of Shadyside and Hunt Road in Busti at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday. it caused the water system in the area to lose pressure and some customers were even left with water for a period of time.

According to the Department of Health, when distribution pipes and mains lose pressure, it increases the chance that untreated water and harmful microbes could enter the system.

Any water that is intended for consumption should be boiled first. Water may be used by healthy individuals for showering, bathing, shaving and washing as long as care is taken not to swallow water and avoid shaving nicks.

The boil water order will be in effect until testing confirms that no harmful bacteria are in the system.
