JAMESTOWN – Less than half of students in Jamestown elementary an middle schools have an understanding of the English language and have meet or exceeded English language skill requirements for their respective grade level. That’s according to the state report card that was released late last week by the New York State Education Department.
According to Jamestown’s report card (PDF), just 34 percent of 7th graders in Jamestown achieved English language test scores at level 3 or level 4, and just 39 percent of 8th graders reached scores at level 3 or level 4. Level 3 scoring means the student achieved state proficiency standards and level 4 means the student exceeded proficiency standards. The total percentage of students that achieved level 3 or 4 was also below 50 percent for Grade 3 (46%), Grade 5 (37%) and Grade 6 (41%). Fifty-two percent of the students in Grade 4 reached or exceeded state proficiency standards.
