MORNING NEWS: Edwards Announces Hotline for Reporting Water Chestnut Sightings

July 26, 2012 By WRFA Radio Leave a Comment

The Water Chestnut Plant

MAYVILLE – Chautauqua County Executive Gregory J. Edwards announced today that a Watershed Hotline has been setup for residents to report sightings of the invasive water chestnut in Chautauqua Lake.

Residents can now call the following toll-free numbers to report a water chestnut sighting: North County-(716) 363-4499, Mayville-(716) 753-4499, or South County-(716) 661-7499.

Callers should leave their name, phone number, and the location of the sighting so identified areas can be analyzed. Residents shouldn’t remove this plant from the water, but call the hotline so experts can monitor and properly remove the water chestnut.

“We have already received numerous leads from people out on Chautauqua Lake and we are working on deploying our resources to those spots,” said Edwards. “The hotline is available to make it easier for residents and visitors to report their findings as together we can all help prevent the water chestnut from further spreading through Chautauqua Lake.”

Pictures and posters about water chestnut are also being posted at businesses along Chautauqua Lake.
