JAMESTOWN – Local authorities are still trying to figure out what caused a loud boom in the Jamestown area early Sunday night. The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office received numerous phone calls from residents in Jamestown, Lakewood, Busti and Ashville – along with other reports as far away as Kennedy and Bemus Point – describing a loud bang or explosion.
According to one news report, the noise occurred just after 6 p.m. Sunday in an area southwest of Jamestown. By 8 p.m., the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office dispatch center had received several dozen calls. No immediate details were given as to what caused the noise, which was reported to have rattled the windows of some homes in the immediate vicinity. Speculations from various internet websites include everything from someone setting off an explosive device to a meteor falling out of the sky.
