ALBANY – Many New York Teenagers will no longer be able to go tanning indoors. Last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation to prohibit teens under 17 years old from using UV tanning devices, commonly found in many tanning salons.
Under the new law, all teenagers under 17 will be prohibited from UV radiating tanning beds. Teenagers who are 17 and 18 will still be allowed to use the tanning beds, but only with a parent’s consent.
The American Cancer Society is very supportive of Gov. Cuomo’s decision. Citing information from the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, they stated that nearly 10 percent of 14 year olds, 12 percent of 15 year olds, and 15 percent of 16 year olds have used indoor tanning facilities.
