MAYVILLE – Opening statements in the Anthony Robert Taglianetti murder trial will take place today in Chautauqua County Court in Mavyille.

Taglianetti the Virginia man charged with second-degree murder for allegedly shooting and killing the Superintendent of Clymer Central School, Keith Reed Jr., outside of his home the evening of Sept. 21, 2012. On Sept. 27, Taglianetti was named as a suspect in the case and was apprehended by police in Virginia less than two days later.

While police have not released a motive, it is believed that Taglianitti’s wife was involved in a relationship with Reed and when Taglianetti learned about it, he drove to Clymer from his home in Virginia to confront Reed.

Jury selection lasted for nearly a month and included an effort by public defender Ned Barone to move the trial to another location because of the difficulty in selecting an unbiased jury here in Chautauqua County. The motion was turned down last week by a state appellate court in Rochester.

Opening statements are expected today with the prosecution also expected to introduce evidence of the crime to the jury. The presentation of evidence and testimony from various witnesses and crime experts is expected to last several days.

If convicted of 2nd degree murder, Taglianetti faces 25 years to life in prison.
