SUNY FREDONIA PRESIDENT TO RETIRE AT END OF SCHOOL YEAR

The top administrator of SUNY Fredonia plans to retire at the end of the new school year. President Dennis L. Hefner, who is entering his 16th year as leader of the SUNY Fredonia campus, announced Friday his intentions to retire following the close of the 2011-12 academic year. Hefner  joined the campus in 1996 is the longest-serving president in the history of the modern Fredonia campus. The 65-year-old president said if necessary, he will remain on as president after the school year, until a replacement has been named. A search for his successor will be commencing promptly.

CELORON TEEN CHARGED AFTER SMUGGLING CONTRABAND INTO JAIL

A 19 year old Celoron resident was arrested on Sunday for allegedly trying to sneak contraband into the Chautauqua County jail. The Sheriff’s office says Andrea Mckoon was found to allegedly be in possession of contraband consisting of tobacco cigarettes, matches, and a small quantity of marijuana. Officers say Mckoon was allegedly intending on passing the contraband to an inmate that she was visiting in the Chautauqua County Jail. She was charged with a felony count of Promoting Prison Contraband 1st Degree, along with Unlawful Possession of Marijuana. Mckoon arraigned in Town of Chautauqua Court and remanded to Chautauqua County Jail on $5,000 cash bail.

AUDITION ANNOUNCED FOR FALL PRODUCTION AT JCC

Auditions for this fall’s JCC Uncommoner’s Production will take place at the end of this month.  “The 24th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” will hold auditions on Monday August 29 and Tuesday August 30 at 7pm. The show relies heavily on good singers and strong characterizations. A pianist will be provided at the audition, but anyone auditioning should bring along sheet music to a song they wish to perform.  Also, anyone  interested in working backstage, or helping with the production, or if you have further questions concerning the audition process, call the director at 716-338-1153. Rehearsals run Mon-Fri from 7:00-10:00pm, beginning right after Labor Day, and performances will run November 11-19, 2011.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO HOLD SPEAKER SEMINAR

The Chautauqua County Historical Society would like to invite the public to its next upcoming speaker program. Town of Chautauqua and Mayville Historian Devon Taylor will present “The History of Lakeside Park and the Mayville Shoreline” on Wednesday, Aug. 24 at 6:00 p.m. in Mayville’s Lakeside Park. In addition to the speaker, a summer picnic will also take place. There is no cost to attend the speaker program or the picnic, but everyone who is on hand is encouraged to provide a dish to pass. CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY ETHICS BOARD MEETS LATER TODAY

A meeting will be held by the Chautauqua County Ethics Board at the Gerace Office Building, 3 North Erie St., Mayville, NY 14757 in the Basement IT Lab today August 29 at 5:00 p.m. The current Chautauqua County Ethics Board members are: Marcia Bliss, Susan Dilks, Russell Payne, Mary Kay Szwejbka, and William Tucker. The meeting is open to the public.
