WRFA NEWS WEB EXTRA: Higgins Release Statement On New Congressional Lines

March 19, 2012 By WRFA Radio Leave a Comment

Congressman Brian Higgins

WASHINGTON – Congressman Brian Higgins, who has represented Chautauqua County in the House of Representatives since 2005, issued the following statement upon learning he would no longer have the opportunity to serve as the area’s congressman when new congressional district lines are put in place in 2013:

“Today’s actions by the federal court maps out Congressional districts in New York State for the next ten years.  The new lines shift our representation northward but maintain our opportunity for a strong Western New York voice in the House of Representatives.

“It has been an extraordinary privilege to serve more than 50 towns, cities and villages across Southern Erie County and Chautauqua County.  These are communities I have come to know well and love, within a region where, working alongside others, we achieved great progress.  I have met thousands of special people in Chautauqua and Southern Erie Counties over the last several years and I must confess sadness at no longer having the opportunity to directly represent these residents after this year. They are extraordinary people, and I have enjoyed every minute of my service to them.

“But with change comes extraordinary opportunity, and we are excited about it. The new 26th Congressional District includes my lifelong hometown, the city of Buffalo, and preserves and extends our ability to represent Western New York’s waterfront north to include the Tonawandas, Grand Island and Niagara Falls.  We look forward to continuing our service in the city of Lackawanna and the towns of West Seneca and Cheektowaga and welcome the opportunity to represent most of the town of Amherst, the most populous town in Western New York.

“It remains an honor to stand up for our community in our nation’s capital. Exciting momentum continues to build locally, contributing to growing optimism about our region’s future.  We remain eager to continue to play a role in advancing the positive development occurring across the region, and look forward to continuing our fight on behalf of Western New Yorkers.”
