MAYVILLE – As the summer comes to a close and many children and teens return to school this week, Chautauqua County executive Vince Horrigan is reminding motorists to use caution and watch for children.

During this week’s Monday Morning Memo, the county executive provided several tips for drivers to remember now that school is back in session. They include:

  • Obey the speed limit, especially in school zones;
  • Be prepared to stop for children and adults using crosswalks;
  • Watch for children using cross walks or sidewalks to get to and from school;
  • Be careful of children who are waiting for their buses on driveways, curbs, or sidewalks near the roadway;
  • If a school bus has its yellow lights flashing, it means the bus is preparing to stop so drivers should slow down; and
  • When approaching a school bus with its red flashing lights on or its stop signs out, all lanes of traffic must stop.
  • By obeying the laws of the road and being aware of their surroundings, drivers can help ensure that everyone has a safe school year.
