JAMESTOWN – The Jamestown Board of Public Utilities is warning customers to be on the lookout for a phone scam.
Officials say they’ve learned that an unidentified person has been calling area residents and stating that their electricity would be shut off immediately unless they gave them bank account or credit card information over the phone; or met them at a local convenience store.
According to a release from the BPU, the utility never takes such information over the phone for payment, but instead requires payment by mail; in person at the BPU, City Hall or the Town of Ellicott; and on line.
It also as drop boxes where it accepts checks – including at the BPU, on Tracy Plaza, at the Jamestown Police Department and at the Town of Ellicott Building.
Officals ask residents to please not give anyone your banking or credit information over the phone, especially if they are impersonating the BPU.
