MORNING NEWS: Effort to Reform U. S. Tax Code is Moving Forward

March 6, 2013 By WRFA Radio 1 Comment

WASHINGTON, DC – Chautauqua County’s representative in Washington says he’s optimistic comprehensive tax reform will cross the finish line. Congressman Tom Reed, R-Corning, says the growing number of voices in Washington advocating for comprehensive tax reform is a good sign that the 113th Congress will be successful in simplifying the current 70,000-page tax code.

In a statement, Reed said that Leadership on both sides of the aisle and in both the House and U.S. Senate are coming out in support of tax reform. The Corning Republican also called it good news for families and small businesses throughout the 23rd congressional district, who he says could use simplification from the current tax code.

Currently, the House Ways and Means Committee has 11 tax reform working groups reviewing current law and compiling feedback that will be reported back to the Committee. Reed was named to four bipartisan comprehensive tax reform working groups: Energy, Manufacturing, Education and Family Benefits, and Real Estate. Reed said the groups met last week for their initial organizational meetings and will meet regularly through the spring.

Surely this will happen as Congressman Reed says, because as we all know, reforming the tax code has no political angle to it at all and everyone on both sides of the aisle agree completely on all the “reforms” that are needed: a flat personal income tax; eliminating all taxes on corporate income, capital gains and dividends; etc.
