ALBANY – There’s more proof that residents in New York State are the most heavily taxed in the union. The same organization that came out earlier this year saying New York has the worst business tax climate is out this week with a study showing that individual New Yorkers pay more in taxes than those in any other state. According to the Tax Foundation, while Americans paid an average 9.9 percent of their income in taxes, New Yorkers paid 12.8 percent in 2010. Making matters worse, the Empire Center’s E.J. McMahon notes that the data shows how New Yorkers’ tax burdens actually grew worse during the Recession relative to the rest of the nation.
