MORNING NEWS: Two Businesses Cited for Selling Tobacco to Minors

March 13, 2013 By WRFA Radio Leave a Comment

MAYVILLE – The illegal sale of tobacco products to minors continues to be on the decline in Chautauqua County. That’s according to a recent report by the Chautauqua County Department of Health, which says that only two businesses throughout the county illegally sold tobacco products to minors in 2012. That’s compared to three operators were cited during the same time period in 2011.

Health department officials say that over 150 inspections of tobacco retailers were conducted by the Health Department during 2012.  These inspections were unannounced compliance checks where minors attempted to purchase tobacco under the direct supervision of the enforcement official.

The Health Department also made 117 visits to businesses to determine compliance with signage and registration requirements.  The two businesses that sold tobacco to minors were the former Wilson Farms store on North Main St. in Jamestown and Hogan’s Hut in Stow.

Two businesses were fined $1,600 each for the violation.
