A Buggy was significantly damaged after being hit by a car on Quaint Rd. Friday, Aug. 28, 2015.

POLAND, NY – An Amish family is recovering from injuries sustained after their horse and buggy was hit by a distracted driver at approximately 11:00 a.m. last Friday.

According to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, rescue crews and police were dispatched to the scene of the accident –which took place near the intersection of Stone Rd. and Quaint Rd. in the town of Poland.

Police say 29 year old Amanda Braley of Kennedy was traveling South on Quaint Rd. near Stone Road in the town of Poland when she failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway due to being distracted from using her cell phone, and by her three children.

The vehicle crossed over into the oncoming lane where it struck an Amish Buggy carrying five people ranging from 39 years old, to 2 months old. Police say 28 year old Nancy J Byler from Mercer suffered serious injuries and was transported to WCA by Kennedy Rescue. Braley was also transported to WCA with minor injuries. The horse pulling the buggy was also seriously injured.

WRFA has learned that as of Saturday night, all members of the Amish family are out of the hospital and recovering at home. The horse was also reported as banged up with a lot of stitches in its legs.

Braley was charged with Failure to keep right, Operating a motor vehicle while using a cell phone, and with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended driver’s license. She will appear in the town of Poland Court at a later date.
