FALCONER MAN IN ICU AFTER MONDAY ACCIDENT
A Falconer man was sent to a Buffalo Hospital in critical condition early last night following a single vehicle crash in the Town of Poland. Sheriff Deputies say 50 year old Jeffrey Gunnell was operating his pickup truck on Waterman Road at about 6:20 p.m. when he left the roadway and rolled his vehicle several times. He was taken to WCA Hospital and then transferred to ECMC in Buffalo for serious injuries and was last listed in critical condition. The investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing.
COUNTY EXEC CALLS FOR 12.6 PERCENT TAX INCREASE IN 2012 BUDGET
Chautauqua County Executive Greg Edwards is calling for a property tax increase of over 12.5 percent in his 2012 budget proposal. The tentative spending plan calls for a tax increase of $1.13 per thousand dollars of assessed valuation, bringing the county’s property tax rate to $10.03 per thousand for 2012.
Despite a sharp increase in property taxes, the executive’s budget is actually calls for the removal of 42.5 positions. The cuts include what would be the equivalent of 20 full-time positions from the Sheriff’s Office, 10.4 from Public Facilities, 3.5 from Social Services, 3 from Planning and Economic Development, 2 from the Board of Elections and 4.8 from Public Health.
The spending plan will now go to county lawmakers for deliberation and adjustments before being finalized. Edwards will also formally present the spending plan when lawmakers met in Mayville tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m.
ARTS OF THE ANEW EXHIBIT STILL SEEKING SUBMISSIONS
The agency that serves as Chautauqua County’s domestic Violence and rape crisis center is still seeking local artists to help with an upcoming exhibit in Jamestown. The Salvation Army Anew Center will be hosting its first art exhibition during October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Anew Spokesperson Vanessa Weinert says the name of the exhibit is”Art of the Anew: Domestic Violence Awareness through Creative Art” and set to open at the Jamestown Renaissance Center on Oct. 14. Weinert adds the aim of the exhibit is to spark a new and communitywide conversation on the full spectrum of issues that surround the pervasive and often invisible topic of domestic violence.
Any artist that participates may also put their pieces up for sale with a small portion of the proceeds going to The Salvation Army Anew Center. The exhibition will run through Oct. 28. All artistic media is being accepted, and submissions can be dropped off at 204 Prather St. in Jamestown.

NO DRILLING IN ALLEGANY STATE PARK
Allegany State Park will remain safe from oil and gas drilling. That’s according to Senator Catharine Young, who says that Governor Cuomo has signed a pair of bills she sponsored in the Senate to keep oil and gas drilling outside Allegany State Park.
In a press release, Senator Young said any drilling in Allegany State Park is highly inappropriate, considering it is public property that is funded by taxpayers and belongs to the people.
Allegany State Park attracts about 1.5 million people every year who come to take advantage of outdoor activities and enjoy its tranquil and natural beauty. It is estimated the state park generates more than $60 million for the region’s economy annually.
WCA BEAM RAISING IS TODAY
And officials with WCA Hospital will hold a Beam raising ceremony later today. The event will take place to celebrate the placement of the last steel i-beam for the hospital’s new Emergency Room facility. To date, WCA has now secured $11.5 M toward the campaign’s $16.5 M capital goal for the construction of the new Emergency Department. The campaign is accepting gifts and pledges payable through 2013, when the new facility is expected to be open and operational.
