Chautauqua Lake Ice Fisherman Rescued After Falling Through Thin Ice Tuesday Afternoon

March 9, 2016 By WRFA Radio Leave a Comment

Chautauqua County SheriffDEWETTVILLE – Two ice fishermen had to be rescued from Chautauqua Lake Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s office, 79 year old Jim Moore of Emporium, PA and 57 year old Mike Cooney of Austin, PA were ice fishing in the Town of Chautauqua when they fell through the ice.

Cooney was able to pull himself out of the water onto the ice. Moore was wearing a life jacket and, with Cooney’s assistance, was able to hang onto the ice shelf until he was rescued by the Dewittville Fire Dept’s hover craft.

Both Moore and Cooney were transported to Westfield hospital and treated for hypothermia.

With the recent warm weather officials warn against going out onto the ice of the lake for the remainder of the winter season.
